Last Friday, at the Brooklyn Q&A of their #BlackWomenTaughtUs book tour, Dr. Jenn M. Jackson urged a room of mostly black gender flux and women folx to refuse artificial boundaries given to us. ✨ Brilliantly simple. And yet, if you were raised by a black woman, or raised TO BE a black woman, you recognize that refusal… is radical. Similarly, you understand the gravity of such a provocation.

It is an act of self love to unlearn self betrayal. To step toward the person you actually are in spite of all the external messages about who other people believe (or expect) you to be. To refuse.

In that room, I found pieces of myself mirrored in the warmth of Ericka and Jenn’s exchanges, and the knowing “mmms" that filled the space when either articulated a feeling that resonated deeply in our bones. It was full, it was safe, it was everything it needed to be.

I closed the evening, in community once more, swag surfing with the BOYZ at the Haus of Ken debut party “The GentleThem’s Room.” #YallSeenTheHat But not before I ran into 50-11 people I either haven’t seen IRL in a while, or had the pleasure of meeting for the first time.

Ya’ll can’t stack a bill with non-binary brilliance and expect me NOT to pull up. 👀 Like please BFFR 🤣
